My fight…?! training, Kenichi, MMA Reality show!

Posted in every day, family and holidays, fight, friends, training on February 27th, 2015 by roxyfighter

I’m fighting…..sometime! I kind of know when, but not exactly. I don’t know where! But I know who! And I can’t tell you! 😛 So keep your ears and eyes open! hahahaha!

So when I got back from my trip to visit my family and Serena, I increased my cardio by running stairs and doing circuits. I did coach John Wood’s hard pre-fight mitt session (between hitting mitts, picking up and slamming the heavy bag so simulate fighting), and I lasted pretty well. So I’m in great shape!

Jamie Moyle is fighting in Invicta tonight! Good luck! SMACK DOWN!!
Coach John’s new clothing company is on it’s feet and swinging for the fenses! MVRK (sounds like “Maverick”). There are some pretty cool designs, so if you’re interested, check out and follow them on social media Twitter: @MVRKClothing
here’s a link to buy my walk-out T shirt with their logo on the top.

Hannah Fitzpatrick is visiting from Kentucky with the Real Water MMA production. So this company is sponsoring an MMA reality show, like the Ultimate Fighter, except for amateurs! They live in a house and train in Las Vegas for a few months, and then fight. I’m so excited to have another female training partner, and new friend. 😀

Yesterday, she punched me in the nose and it started bleeding. Oh well, these things happen. The other day my foot whacked into her cheek by accident and cut her a bit. Oh well!

Here’s last season’s episode 1!

I’m pretty happy with my training right now. 🙂 Learning so much and improving so much in all areas of my game. I think I might have made strength gains, too. Thanks to my coaches and Syndicate. <3 IMG_6042

I finished Sword Art Online (an anime) and I miss it now. :/ I did prefer the first season to the second season. I’m starting this anime called “History’s greatest disciple Kenichi.” I LOVE IT. It’s about this high schooler who gets bullied so he joins a dojo and trains to become stronger. There are so many funny cool masters who teach him and say great quotes that I feel are speaking directly to me. I adore it.

…..and because our neighbors blast heavy base music all day and night, and the guy underneath clunks around, my mom is unable to find peace and so we decided to move. SHE decided to move, and I have to bear with it. I don’t want to move. 🙁 Two buildings down in the same apartment complex. ug. x_x pain in the neck.

My take on Performance Enhancing Drugs

Posted in Uncategorized on February 23rd, 2015 by roxyfighter

Here’s my take on Performance Enhancing Drugs in MMA.

First I just want to say that I try really hard not to judge other people, because in order to do that, we’d have to live in their skin, experience the same exact things, and deal with the same feelings.

What is a performance enhancing drug?

I consider myself an intelligent, educated person. I took a few nutrition courses in college, but I’m not a scientist or nutritionist or doctor myself.

I take Muscle Pharm’s Amino acids cocktail and the RECON (recovery drink.) The former enhances my performance (by giving me a slight energy boost between sessions) and the latter helps me recover after training. But they are fine and legal.

What makes others bad? Umm….

Let’s see. What Anderson Silva was busted for was “dromostanolone.” Wikipedia and this other site says: “it’s an anabolic steroid used to lower cholesterol levels, treat cancers to inhibit estrogen, and used in bodybuilding (because it inhibits estrogen.) It can result in mass and strength gains.”

methyltestosterone is used to treat men with testosterone deficiency. (wiki page)

I googled “healing injuries” and found this site about how anabolic steriods can help heal injuries. website link

So….okay. I can sympathize with the training injuries. You are a fighter who’s one and only source of income for you and your wife and baby is MMA, and your leg got snapped in half and you’re in agonizing pain 24/7. You need to heal ASAP. Okay… I sympathize.

I was in Japan years ago and got a corneal abrasion. Those things hurt like the end of the world every time you blink, but thankfully, with eye drop medicine, they heal within a week. The doctor in Japan handed me two eyedrop bottles and said, “This is the antibiotic, and this is the steroid medicine.” I was like, “STEROID? OMG I can’t possibly do steroids!” He answered, “No, No, some medicines have a little bit in them and it’s totally fine.” I was like, “…..really?” So I googled it and it seemed to be true, so I took the eye drops for like 3 days to heal my cornea so I could see. (now I found out that it actually can delay healing in that case. wtf?) Anyway, I wanted to barf from the pain in my eye, so I get it. But make sure it’s not going to be illegal, I suppose?

Now. As for quick muscle gains and recovery….. that’s where I have the most issues. I wish I had more muscles. I try to lift but seem to have trouble putting on muscle. I would love to be stronger. I’m …well, not naturally athletic and muscular compared to other, more athletic fighters.

I’m also 32 years old and it takes me a long time to recover compared to when I was 20.

So I’m sitting home on a Sunday barely able to move, suffering, while other athletes who took steroids are out running and lifting and getting twice the work.

I know you have a career and babies at home, and I sympathize. But I ALSO have dreams. I also have a career and goals. All pro fighters are fighting for something important to them. It makes me really sad when I hear people are busted for PED.

Now….let’s look at the contents of what I’m taking….
recon contents
hmmmm what is… L-Valine? or Chromium Polynicotinate? I do not know.
animo contents
What does GoldenSeal root powder do? Or L-Leucine? I haven’t the faintest idea! But I’m pretty sure amino acids are already found in the body naturally.

HOWEVER, there’s this nifty “UFC” seal on it, so I know it’s fine. I think if people don’t know what stuff is that they’re taking, they better find out or make SURE it’s approved.

ufc mark

I think the UFC’s testing is a good solution – test fighters right before fights, right after fights, and way before fights, during their training camp. Look up the cycles and how long it takes for stuff to get out of the body, and try to catch fighters. This is really important because fighter’s lives are on the line here. It’s worth the risk to some people because the advantage is so great …winning or losing a big fight can change your life completely! For better or for worse! Each fight is a really really big deal to a pro fighter.

my trip to Philly and New Jersey!

Posted in family and holidays on February 18th, 2015 by roxyfighter

The plan was to fly from Vegas to Philadelphia Feb 12th, spend the 12th, 13th and Saturday the 13th at Serena’s house. Then, rent a car on Saturday the 13th and drive two hours to Bergenfield, NJ, super early Sunday. Spend Sunday and Monday with my aunt, uncle and cousins. Do a seminar Monday night at Killer B. Then, drop the Enterprise car off at the Newark airport, and fly home to Vegas on Tuesday the 13th.

Flew into Philly. Got picked up by Serena, her mother Billie, little brother Brandon 11 yrs old, and little sister Kelsie 13 yrs old. I fell in love with them. We got cheese steaks and OMG SO GOOD.
cheesesteaks with serena

Hung out with them, played video games (Street Fighter vs Tekken, Super Smash Brothers which I have always sucked at and still suck at, and Mario Kart)
video games with serena 2

Friday, woke up, went to the YMCA where Serena lifted and I did my yoga warmups and a little workout but I was so tired and felt like crap, so I didn’t do too much besides that. We took a train into downtown Philadelphia and ate Dim Sum at China Town. SO GOOD. Fun! Except SOMEBODY should warn me that certain dim sum dumplings EXPLODE when you bite INTO THEM! XD

Things you can see from pictures of me and Serena: we resemble each other, I have the same smile/expression all the time, and Serena has way too much fluffy hair. lol My hair hangs straight and I can’t handle it if it goes in my face, so I don’t know how she handles it. ;D

Went home. Went to Serena’s Muay Thai class! I’ve always wanted to visit her gym, so this was cool! It’s Brazilian Jui-Jitsu United. I was nervous about the striking classes because of my bad shoulders, but enjoyed it very much. Justin LaBarge taught a few techniques and I got to practice with Serena. He even held mitts for me over the course of the class, and took the time to give me advice about my knees. Thank you! Then open mat, and I sparred with Serena. We both did well. Serena has improved, stand up and jiu-jitsu! Good job! At one point, my finger got hit and it hurt a lot. I was scared, but I waited for it to stop hurting and kept training.

haha -_-;;; #fighterthings. It’s fine, though.

I got to do MMA with Serena again! Her top control is so much better than before. At one point she passed to side control and I thought, “okay la la la I’ll get out and escape now…” but I could not get out. LOL
justin labarge and gym

Saturday morning we did a Muay Thai class, followed by a jiu-jitsu class. I enjoyed practicing these checks and elbows (I gotta write stuff down, actually). In BJJ beginner’s class we did spider guard sweep which I’m glad we reviewed cuz I sucked at it. I’m a purple belt, but I never put on the gi for the 8 years I’d been in Japan, so I need to relearn the grips and balance of GI jiu-jitsu. It’s embarrassing. @_@; In the advanced class, coach Jared Weiner also taught this foot trip/sweep take-down thing I really like and want to practice more.

In my first round to spar, I got poked in the eye by somebody by accident. I don’t think he even knows he did it because I didn’t say anything, but these things happen. To me, especially. It just is unfortunate. :/ Thankfully I got some medicine immediately. <3 I didn't get to say goodbye to the teacher and classmates formally because I was on the phone trying to call my doctor. Sorry about that! But thanks for having me and teaching me! I enjoyed my time there. 🙂 Great group of people. There was this brown belt girl I REALLY wanted to spar with. gah. I had an abrasion (light scratch) on my cornea, and it felt like needles every time I blinked. Do you know how many times you blink a minute? ;_; then when the eye waters, the salt stings like hell. Somehow I managed to hang out with Serena and my fan who crossed over to "friend" Joolhoolz on twitter, Julius in real life. 😀 We watched the UFC fight night in the Iron Abbey. Man, the main card starts at 10 on the main coast?! I can't handle that. You know me, I conk out at 10:30 every night normally. We left at 10:30. lol I didn't know a single person I saw fight on the undercard. ^^;; roxy joolz
He gave me some books as gifts! (and I signed mine for him) Thank you so much!! Sorry my single eye was watering like every 5 minutes. -_-;;;

I tried to take my hat off for pictures. The eye was light sensitive so Serena lent me her hat, which didn’t fit. haha.

Sunday, it was snowing. I decided that I couldn’t drive because my eye kept watering and I kept having to squeeze my eyes shut, so it was decided I would take a train to NJ. Serena’s dad Basil and Serena started driving me to NJ and then found the highway clear, so Basil decided to drive me all the way.

Two hours. I tried to protest, but he wouldn’t hear of it. 😡 Thank you sooooo much! <3 They dropped me off at my family's house, where I immediately hopped in the car with my cousins, had lunch at a diner with them, and then went to their church. After that, we hung out, played with her baby Tino, and baked cupcakes. 😀 adele and roxy
(notice on my T -shirt there are charactures of me and Serena. I’m a samurai and she is a viking. by Julie at Mei-li Fighting)

The eye felt a little better….only tearing up uncontrollably once every hour at that point.

But I woke up Monday with it still bad enough that I felt I’d have an accident driving, and felt I could not teach the seminar. “So now you do this take-down….ow wait a second, give me five minutes for me to open my eye again…”

I had to cancel it. 🙁 I’m soooo sorry to Killer B academy for setting it up for me and then letting them down. I want to visit next time I’m in the area! I’ll make it up to you guys.

I had a great time with my family, though! We hung out on Monday and then Tuesday Luis drove me to the Newark airport. so I ended up never renting a car. And I just missed getting snowed in.

What an adventure. My life is an adventure.
I’m pretty sure I’m fat now, so I’m starting a fight diet today.

my last week’s summary (w/ SAO characters)

Posted in amusing, every day, friends, fun, training on February 11th, 2015 by roxyfighter

So all last week I’d been trying to train lightly because of my busted nose, by grappling lightly with Jesus before class and not participating in the MMA team practice, because I didn’t want to get my nose bonked. Last Saturday I thought I could go harder and BJJ sparred with guy who spazzed out and kneed me in the nose, and it started bleeding. Grrrr.
kirito mad

I had to skip the kickboxing sparring for the day. But Monday I did MMA and it was fine, and yesterday I did kickboxing and it was fine. YAYYYY!

Lots of challenges yesterday. Started out feeling like crap – could be the fact I’ve been waking up at 3:30 every day for the past week coupled with hormones and a weakening immune system. I felt a stuffy nose yesterday, BUT I haven’t straight come down with anything. Technique was great. I struggled energy-wise in warmups. In sparring, I stood southpaw with Jamie cuz her next opponent is a southpaw. Invicta, quit giving my teammates southpaws! LOL (Liz had a southpaw last fight). It screws me up. haha But I survived and didn’t do TOO badly. My blocking has gotten a LOT better recently! I’m really happy about that. I’m blocking like a NINJA!
Now if only I could do it like Brolly…..

I sparred a bunch of rounds and did relatively well, but stuff started hurting and I started feeling light headed, so I sat out of sparring the last round. I tried to hit the bag instead but felt horrible, and couldn’t stand up well. Everybody else did this conditioning drill but I sat out…I HATE THAT. I feel wracked with guilt. I HATE telling John that I don’t want to do it. He said okay, but uuuuuuuurg I can’t bear not finishing class. It’s still bothering me. I thought about it all afternoon, last night, and this morning. I want to cry. But I didn’t want to push it and then fall over and injure something. I didn’t know what to do.

I wish Serena were there to tell me not to take it so seriously and get so upset (which she did by text later). It’s practice. But that’s what makes a successful professional fighter. Somebody who cares too much and pushes themself too much. *sigh* I have so much to learn, so much stronger to get, and not enough time!

Our coaching team came back from John’s bachelor’s party! I missed them! John and Casey and Mike and Chaz! and my boss Jason H, of course.

asuna crying

Did learn some cool wrestling stuff from Coach Jason Sargus, though. I’m such a slow learner. lol I couldn’t get it in class, got sooo frustrated, went home, thought about it obsessively, went to bed thinking about it, probably dreamed about it, came back the next class and thought “oh!” and then did the move on somebody in sparring. LOL YES GO ME
asuna happy

So I’m not teaching kids anymore because there’s been a shuffling of teaching staff, and my position was filled. 🙁 I miss teaching them so much and I want to coach them because I know them! It sucks. I still go into the gym in the afternoon just to watch. Which is even worse. The kids are like, “Hi Roxanne! When are you teaching us next?” :{ I substitute sometimes…. I’m actually going to start an MMA class for teenagers! 13-16 years old, on Saturday mornings from 11 AM to 12 :D. I’m so excited! It’s going to start the 28th!

I caught up to the new releases of Naruto, so I started watching this anime Serena recommended called “Sword Art Online.” (SAO) These characters get trapped in a virtual MMA online Role Playing Game and can only get out if they clear the game. My friend Q said it reminded her of .hackSign, but the two anime are so dissimilar that I didn’t even think of .hackSign when watching SAO. I’ve had more time than usual lately due to not teaching kids, no private lessons, and lack of chores, so I finished season 1 in a week, and now am onto season 2. Well, my Japanese is back to par. 🙂 It had suffered when I was watching English shows only, like Lost, Constantine, Star Wars Rebels, etc.

This weekend, specifically from tomorrow, I’m going to visit my friend Serena DeJesus, and family in New Jersey! I’ll be doing an MMA seminar at Killer B
