“mind the drips!” Living with Mom again, and training

Posted in family and holidays, friends on October 29th, 2013 by roxyfighter

I have the net in my home now! 😀 I’m so excited I no longer have to sit on the floor of my apartment’s fitness center to use the free wifi!! 😀 😀 😀

in the gym
I haven’t really had a lot of time to do much online lately, since my mom got here. This week has been kind of hard for a number of reasons. But I love my mom so much and I’m glad she’s here. I haven’t lived with her since I was a high school student. I’ve “visited” for Christmas, but it’s like I have to bow down to her rules since it’s her house. Now, we’re sharing.

We are SO much a like, but also so different. For example, she wants to save electricity so she often doesn’t turn on the lights sometimes, but I would and do. u_U lol When I made an ice bath in my tub, I used a bucket to use the water to flush the toilet to save water. She does that, too.
She freaks out when I drip water on the floor, like moving from washing my hands in the sink to the stove, if I don’t dry them enough. Apparently, drips are EVIL. lol I’m like, “It evaporates, I don’t care.” But she hates dripping. What can you do?

We both agreed that we have to respect each other’s individuality.

My mom knows SO much about nutrition. She’s always telling me what nutrients are in each food I’m eating. She can list off vitamins and minerals off the top of her head, and if she doesn’t know, she whips out a massive book. hahaha She’s so awesome.

And today, I was putting peanut butter on this carrot (my fav snack). She looked at the ingredients, suddenly exclaiming, “Hey! LOok at this! It’s one of these new things, they’re putting fully hydrogenated fats in here, which is even worse than trans fats!” and I got a huge long lecture. Which was actually fantastic. I never would have realized that this brand does that…. I promised to buy natural peanut butter after that.

But then I drank soy milk and she said there was sugar in it and sugar is evil. Dude…I like sugar. ;_; I mean, I don’t eat Frootloops! But it’s good for me to be open-minded. I never really paid attention to sugar in healthy food. But I don’t think it’s that much. But I guess it’s good to be aware…?

I’m super inspired, and I’ve decided to write another book, when I have time ! It’s going to be called “How to be positive and successful.” My mom has been saying quotes lately like gems, and I’ve been writing them all down! I realized that so much of what she says has helped shape my way of thinking that helped me be positive. And my dad has said a lot of encouraging things, about how to be successful, as have coaches. So I want to use all this inspiration from my parents and mentors and give something back to the world.

So when people say, “How can you be so positive?” I’ll say, “Read my book.” 🙂

Thus, my nick name, “The Happy Warrior.” You can’t just say “oh just think positively,” you have to TEACH someone HOW to do it. That’s like in MMA. Once I heard a coach scream from the corner, “Just get up!” because his guy was getting GnP-ed. That’s no good. You have to give detailed instruction on where to place your hands and how to move in order TO follow the directions.

But I want my current book-in-progress to get printed. ~_~

I’ve been training my butt off. Yes, and I mean it, it’s so sore it feels like it’s going to break. hahahaha

Gosh I love Syndicate. I love my head coach and the other trainers. Man, today after sparring I was beat, so I didn’t go in to the evening class, but instead I went to see my chiropractor Jake Steckel. I saw everyone warming up in Vinny’s class, and thought, “MAN, I learn so much every time! There’s not enough time in the day, not enough days in the week! I’m sitting here on the couch cursing my body for not being able to train moremoremore! We’re only human, I know. But I want to train every second! ;_;

so busy! Mom! training! halloween party! pics

This week has been so busy I haven’t even had time to blog! My mom showed up Tuesday evening, and she doesn’t have a car, so I have to take care of her. We managed to sign up for the internet, go shopping for and buy a microwave, and I tried to fatten her up a bit by taking her out for Chinese buffett two times this week. Haha

And I’m training hard like a maniac. Things are great. 😀

I carved a pumpkin in the shape of my gym Syndicate’s sign!

I went to a Halloween party yesterday! It was so much fun! Thanks, Fredson and everyone! I dressed up as Chopper from One Piece.

This is Jamie, Chris and me!

So much happened yesterday!
I recorded and uploaded my fan interview! Part 2 is on the way. (see end of entry)

I spread around my TUF blog 7 with unseen footage! Check it out after you read this!

Then I went to Fredson’s no-gi jiu-jitsu class. We learned two ways to get out of side control, one I later used in sparring! 😀 He also taught me some Portuguese. I find it necessary in case another random Brazilian kid comes in who doesn’t know English. -_- I worked a lot with Bethany and Brittany, two very nice ladies. :}

I got super confused about one of my favorite moves because Fredson said it’s no good, and he escaped like 4 times….feel like I must be doing it wrong. How can he escape but for years nobody else could escape? So confused. x_x;

Sparring class was after jiu-jitsu. I didn’t feel very well and was considering leaving, but one of the coaches Chaz said something that really inspired me, so I forced myself. I felt worse physically afterwards but mentally good, and I got some good practice in. I can feel myself improving!

Find a way to win.

Left the gym, drove to the Rio, and met Victoria and Brandon! 😀 We went to the “Aki Matsuri,” which had lots of food stands called yatai, shops, and a karaoke dance thingie. :}

My Luffy shirt was dirty so I wore my Jimbei shirt and Luffy hat, from the anime One Piece! We saw some cool cosplayers, and a really good Neji! She even had the contact lenses in for the eyes!!

My friends then took me to a Japanese restaurant, Izakaya style, called Ichiza. We ate ika-yaki, ebi chahan, shouyu ramen, and tako yaki! 😀 So good! Then for dessert, honey toast with ice cream! Omg so many carbs. Lol

When we parted, I realized it wasn’t that late, so I still had all evening. Swim to work off all the calories I just ate, watch UFC or watch amateur teammates Daniel, Bryson, and new friend Quinn fight at King of the Cage?

Hmmmm. I chose King of the Cage. But I didn’t have a ticket. I texted my new buddy and generally suspicious loiterer Bootsy who replied, “Just try the ‘don’t you know who I am?’ approach.” good idea, haha. I went hoping to smile myself in. It’s been working lately.

Turns out that the entrance wasn’t run by promotion people, but by The Palms Casino security. I paused in front of the entrance, and this huge guy the size of Maurice at my gym said, “Can I help you, Ma’am?” (not miss? ;_;)
I said, “Um, is this King of the Cage?”
“Yes, Ma’am,” he said. “You can get tickets over there by the ticket window.”
“Oh,” I said. “I was hoping you’d let me in because I’m a fighter. I’m on The Ultimate Fighter.”
“No, Ma’am,” he said firmly, and motioned to the ticket window.

Oh, man! :{ I started texting our gym manager to see if he could get me in. Suddenly I heard, “Oh wow, is that Roxanne Modafferi?”

I looked up. These guys rushed over and shook my hand and told me great fight and they loved me on the Ultimate Fighter show. They were very nice. “What are you doing here?” they said. “I’m here to see the fights, but I don’t have a ticket….”
“WHAT?! How could they not let you in?” one of the guys said.
“Yeah, he wouldn’t…. I dunno….”

The man pulled a ticket out of his back pocket. “Here, you can have this one,” he said. How nice of him! I hope he hadn’t been saving it for anybody in particular, but he assured me he wasn’t. Then a few more of his buddies came up, and wanted a picture.
So, as revenge, I got the big security guy to take the picture. The picture actually came out pretty bad (reverse revenge) but my camera sucks, so it’s probably not his fault. Lol
roxy and fan friends

“We’re here to support our fighter Danielle Taylor! Here, have a shirt!” THEY GAVE ME A SHIRT. How nice of them! Man! Best fans ever. Lol I was cold, so I put it on! 😀 how perfect ! Then I went in with them (the show had already started) and sat in their area in the back, which naturally, was only Danielle Taylor-supporters.

They all came and took pictures of me one by one. Hahaha 😀 Then another security guard came over and whispered to me, “Ma’am, I can get you in the VIP box if you’d like to just enjoy the show without people bothering you.”

But no, I love meeting everybody and I want to take pictures. It’s such an honor for me that people actually want to meet me and talk to me. I chatted with their team for like 30 mins before going to find Bootsy.

I thought I’d have to search high and low, but he was like 5 rows down. I recognized him from the top by his knit hat.
roxy and bootsy
Bootsy is linguistically talented and his humor just tickles me, so I was laughing 50% of the time sitting next to him. Haha and his friends cracked me up. It was just a great night.

Except then I realized that Quinn, the girl I met at Syndicate the other day, was set to fight Danielle, the fighter who’s team I just made friends with. -_- Awkwarrrrrrd.

My Syndicate teammate Bryson won, unfortunately Daniel lost, but he fought hard. Did another Syndicate guy fight? ?:O Then Danielle beat Quinn. I didn’t cheer out loud for either of them. We (Bootsy+friends) and the Danielle crowd were permitted to go closer to the cage just for their fight (and we all stayed. Lol)

Then this one guy ( was he drunk?) started screaming cornering advice at another teammate, and one of Bootsy’s friends started mocking him by repeating his words in a bored, deadpan voice.

“Shrimp. Shrimp, mother f*cker. That’s a weak-a$$ guillotine. Weak-a$$ guillotine, mother f*cker. Turn into that mother f*cker. Oh Mother f*cker….”

I felt soooo bad because two guys are fighting their hearts out in front of us, and I’m cracking up laughing. It was a great back-and-forth battle, and both men did a great job.

And then after they stood up, some lady from the balcony above us started shrieking, “Kneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees! Kneeeeeeeeeeees!” and our friend was like, “Is it a bird?” And immediately, all I could think about was a bird. You had to be there. People were so drunk. Then the fight went to the ground, and the guy got tapped. But it was a great fight.

It was cool meeting so many people in between rounds when I got up to walk around to stretch. I went back home, soaked in the hot tub, typed most of this, and then went to bed at 12:30.

This morning, I exercised a bit in my apartment weight room, did neck exercises, and found that I’ve increased my neck raises by FIFTY compared to when I first started going to failure in the TUF house! I don’t know if that’s good or not, but I’m pleased I’m getting stronger! I never want my head to slam off the f*cking canvas ever again. Then I drove to a nearby casino “The Orleans” because they have a highrise hotel building. 21 floors! 🙂 a few times! 😀 Go GO Cardio Ranger!!

Here is the fan interview!

forced day off, Chiroman, teaching kids, my authoritah

Posted in Uncategorized on October 18th, 2013 by roxyfighter

You know you need a day off when you wake up in the morning and wish you hadn’t.
Wednesday was the day I usually take off, but I had really wanted to do BJJ! Yesterday was sparring day. But the biggest challenge of training MMA is knowing how hard to go when. Do I save myself for sparring this afternoon or tomorrow, or push through today/ this morning? It’s really impossible to know, because every time is different.
Oh well. I learned some cool stuff on Wednesday.

I watched Naruto for a few hours, went to Syndicate and started class, thinking if I warmed up, the pain would go away. No. 🙁 Then Jake came and fixed me up. 😀 I <3 Chiroman!! 😀 hahah that’s your new nickname! Superman +Chiropractor = the new breed of hero – Chiroman!!!! 😀 😀 😀 I met this nice woman who's going to fight in King of the Cage on Saturday! damn me, I forget her name. ;_; She was so nice, though! girl from kotc

Went home for a few hours, tried not to be depressed I didn’t spar, did chores, ate a ton of pumpkin pie, then went back to help Chris teach the kid’s classes.

They’re separated into 4:00 – 4:45 5 yr olds to 7 yrs, then 4:45 – 5:30 8yr olds to 14 yr olds. Chris was delayed so I warmed everybody up. Fourth time participating, first time leading. 😀 Then we finished and he STILL hadn’t come, and I hadn’t really thought of anything to do ! Gah! So I started teaching them but scooting backwards in the Gracie Stand up position, and then Chris came. That went fine, as did the next class. I actually rolled with this girl Trinity because she was big enough that I wouldn’t crush her. That was funny. 😀 and fun.

Then wrestling started. I never teach wrestling because… I don’t know wrestling. I mean, I know SOME, but I haven’t learned all the terms, and so when the kids are doing it wrong, I’m not sure how to correct them. I don’t want to be “just do it like this” because it might be jiu-jitsu base, not wrestling base, and not what Johnny taught them before. Like, they teach side control differently than how I would teach it, so I have to pay attention and conform.

A few kids were obviously excited that they saw me on TV. 🙂 One kid kept asking me questions about moves, and it was obvious he could already do well, but wanted me to watch him. 🙂 Which is fine. haha

So the first two classes were separated by age, but not for wrestling. ALL of the kids flooded back onto the mat, and started running in a circle to warm up. Other assistant coaches disappeared, and it looked like only Benji. Where was Johnny? Oh well.

So I was just about to leave to go to Colleen’s going away BBQ when Benji came up to me. “I’m covering for Johnny…” he said, “Are you staying?”
“No…” I said.
“Please do,” he said earnestly. I looked at the mass of 35+ kids swirling around like a hurricane. 😡 Cancel my plans to cover for a colleague with little reward except it’s the right thing to do? Aaah, sounds familiar, like my former job at BERLITZ. Haha! I don’t miss that aspect about my lovely former job! But I’ve never regretted covering. Because it’s the right thing to do.

“Okay,” I said. I became in charge of the little ones, because the Benji’s explanations went totally over their heads. They couldn’t even do the hand grips, much less shoot.

“There are as many girls as boys in this class! It’s 2013!” Benji said. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing! So many girls! 🙂 How cool!

At one point, this 6-7 year old kept climbing on the cage and not even doing the move, so I tried to discipline him by making him do push ups (Chris had done that before) but he refused and wouldn’t cooperate at all. Omg. X_x;; So I taught the other kids and scolded him to get out of the way when he ran around. I asked him what the problem was and he wouldn’t talk to me. -_-; I asked him if the move was boring and if he didn’t want to do it, and he wouldn’t reply! I told Benji to scold him in an authoritative manly fashion, but even that didn’t help. Why not? *falls over* Kids usually listen to me, but there are a few who don’t respect my authoritah!

Class ended, so I showered as fast as I could and headed over to Colleen’s. Party started at 6, but I got there at 7. Turns out she lives like 5 minutes from my place! 😀 I had a ton of chips and guacamole. Lol And a turkey burger and piece of chicken. Hah It was fun. I talked with Syndicate people, some people from Drysdale’s were there, It was great.

Chiroman and his wife were there! That was nice. I started getting really tired, so I left a little early. Fell asleep at my computer so went to sleep at 10:30. Woke up at 5!! Seven hours! Wow! 😀

my dream about wrestling, MMA, and Dana was there!

Posted in dream on October 16th, 2013 by roxyfighter

I dreamed that there was some wrestling/MMA competition put on by Syndicate members in some large arena in a hotel. Dana White put everybody up in the hotel, and sat behind the front desk, greeting people.

I entered the dim lobby with with my roommates from TUF 18 (Shayna, Peggy, Jessica, Jessamyn). We saw him, I went up and said, “Hi Dana!” he said, “Hi, honey!”

I was like “YAY he said hi to me!” (I’m such a fan girl LOL)
He said, “You ready for the tournament!!?”
I said, “Oh yes!” He shook me hand. (fan girl moment #2)

I thought I was supposed to help with the kids, but then everyone was asking me if I was fighting, and I was like, “No, no, I can’t do straight wrestling.” Then I started running into other #TUF 18 fighters, mixed with Syndicate members, and then John Wood and Sean Shelby walked by, and I saw Heather, but they disappeared before I could ask them what to do. I was supposed to be somewhere and help someone, but I got lost in the hotel. At one point I walked into the TUF house kitchen, and was like “This is not the arena….”

lol Then I woke up and it was freaking 2 AM. 🙁 Somehow I managed to doze for another 2 hours! 😀
